Coating Thickness meter
coating thickness meter, paint thickness gauge or coating gauge, is a handheld instrument used to measure the thickness of coatings or paint layers applied to a substrate. This tool is widely used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, construction, and metal finishing, where the quality and performance of coatings are critical.
Magnetic Induction (Ferrous) Coating Thickness Meter:
- This type of gauge is suitable for measuring non-magnetic coatings (such as paint, enamel, and powder coatings) on ferrous (magnetic) substrates, like steel or iron.
- The meter employs a magnetic induction principle, where the instrument generates a magnetic field that induces eddy currents in the conductive metal substrate. The thickness of the coating affects these eddy currents, allowing the gauge to calculate the coating thickness
Eddy Current (Non-Ferrous) Coating Thickness Meter:
- Eddy current gauges are used to measure non-conductive coatings (such as paint, anodizing, or plastic) on non-ferrous substrates, such as aluminum, copper, or stainless steel.
- This type of meter uses a probe with a coil that generates an alternating magnetic field. The presence of the coating alters the impedance of the coil, providing information about the coating thickness.
- Display: A digital display that shows the coating thickness reading, often in microns or mils (thousandths of an inch).
- Calibration: Calibration options to ensure accurate measurements on different surfaces and coatings.
- Dual Technology: Some advanced meters combine both magnetic induction and eddy current methods in one device, making them versatile for various applications.
- Memory and Data Storage: The ability to store measurement data for future reference or analysis.
- Automatic Substrate Recognition: Automatic identification of the substrate type (ferrous or non-ferrous) to apply the appropriate measurement method.
- Zero Adjustment: Capability to set the instrument to a zero reference point before taking measurements.
- Portable Design: Handheld and compact for easy use and portability in the field or on the production floor.
